New Year Walk

Coul Links

The New Year Walk will be to Coul Links

We will enter from the north end in the hopes of finding the shore larks (rare winter visitors) in the gravel areas.

We will then explore the links to see the winter feature of this fascinating area which we tend to visit in the summer or autumn.

Meet:

Tain Lidl car park (NH 7726 8275) at 10:00

or:

Loch Fleet old railway cross roads (NH 8002 9479) at 10:30

If there are too many cars we will move some to the seal-viewing car park.

We will decide on the day whether we walk right through to Embo or do a circular route back to the cars.

You will need:

Warm clothes, boots or waterproof shoes, binoculars &/or telescope, lunch.

Long term forecast: 4°C, light breeze, dry
High Water: 12:56 – 4.7m, this is a very high spring tide
so the slacks will flood soon after we arrive.

Finish c14:30
We may go on somewhere for hot drinks and CAKE
if a suitable convienient hostelry can be found!

Gemenids and star watching at,

Tarbatness Observatory

8:30-10:00 pm or later!

An evening looking at the skies and
a chance to see Denis Buczynski’s observatory.

This year promises to be good for Geminid meteors
(A Great Year for the Geminids! | British Astronomical Association)
and as Denis is Secretary of the Comet Section.of the BAA
we couldn’t have a better host for the evening.
We hope to supply a few warm snacks during the evening
so let us know if you have any dietary requirements.
You need: warm clothes, seat, binoculars.
The long term forecast for next Wednesday is mixed so
it is essential
that you let us know if you wish to attend.
Instructions to find Denis’s house will be given out at Tuesday’s meeting or can be e-mailed to you.

Just N of Lovat Bridge
There is a good mix of woodland, open space and riverside.
Can be wet under foot.

Some cars moved to wallk’s end
for return.

Followed by afternoon tea/coffee & cake in Beauly; should there be any demand for this!
Walking boot/shoes, lunch, suitable clothing (long term forecast – sunny spell, breezy, showers).

or 10:15 Kiltearn Church car-park (NH 616 651)
To reach Kiltearn Church: turn off the A9 S of Evanton onto the B817
Turn right and follow the road over the A9 (Signposted – Kiltearn House)
Follow the road along the bay until you reach the car-park.
You will need
Warm clothes (Forecast – cloudy but cool, slight chance of rain)
Waterproof shoes or boots (rather wet underfoot)
End 12:30 – 1:00 pm

We hope it’s not “Last chance to see”!

You will need:
Walking shoes or boots (Beach walk and dunes –
it can be quite damp in the dune slacks)
Warm waterproof clothing
Lunch
Weather: cloudy with sunny spells and slight chance of showers
We will leave a couple of cars at the end of the walk to take drivers back to the lorry park.

Possibly midget protection, although with the wind forecast they will possibly not be a problem

Showery, windy & cooler than recent days.
As the forecast is not very good it is essential that you let us know if you are coming so that we can contact you if there are last minute changes.

We will be looking at the beasties found in a field with old tree stumps. As is usual with TDFC summer events there will tea, coffee & some eats! As always for this type of event please let me know if you are coming. There is a possibility of midges! Or, wet weather.

Transit of Mercury

Monday, 9th May 2016

If you miss this one there will be a partial transit visible in the British Isles on 11th November 2019 but the next full transit doesn’t occur until 7th May 2049!

This is not a normal field trip.

Russell will have a telescope set up for projection at his house throughout the day so that TDFC members can drop in.

Russell’s house is Cartomie, Edderton, IV19 1LB (NH 709 858)

I will have a telescope set up for projection as well from mid afternoon.
Again you are welcome to drop in.
My house is 3,Springfield, Morangie Road, Tain, IV19 1HR (NH 775 824)

Eclipse glasses will be available at both places for direct viewing.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU SHOULD NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN EITHER THROUGH BINOCULARS OR WITH THE NAKED EYE – YOU COULD PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOU EYES

The timing (BST) of the main events in the transect are:

12:12 – First contact

15:56 – Mid transect

19:40 – Transect ends
