Muir & woodland walk

A little earlier start than usual.

The estate restricts the glen to 25 cars per day so: we need as small a number of cars as possible & we need to be there relatively early.

Meet –

10:00 Glen Strathfarrar entrance gate (NH 400 404)

You will need – lunch, walking shoes, waterproofs.

Forecast – cloudy, breezy. largely dry but a slight possibility of sleet/snow showers!

Finish: 14:30-15:00.

We plan to visit the Loch Laide and Carn na Leitire area of the Abriachan woodland on Saturday.
Early spring flowers, birds, amphibians and trees.
Meet – Tain Lidl carpark (NH 772 827)

The track to the carpark is rather uneven!
You will need – lunch, walking shoes, waterproofs.
Forecast – dry, cloudy, mild.

Venue and time are now confirmed as Fay’s house, the same as the past few years, at 19:30. Please confirm with Fay any food you wish to bring. Own bottles are requested.

Several quizes are awaiting us. Any contribution to the proceedings you may wish to offer, quizzical, audio-visual, etc. please liaise with The Chairman, David McAllister.

To ease parking please try to arrange car sharing.

New Year Walk – Sunday 3rd January – Skelbo Wood

Due to the very windy forecast we have decided to go for an inland walk rather than the coast.

Walking is all on forest paths, steep in places, but much easier and dryer than on the coast.

Meet: Skelbo Wood car park (NH 779 941)

When: Sunday 3rd 11:00 – Note – 30mins later than the previous plan

You need: Waterproof walking boots or shoes.

Warm waterproof clothes (the forecast is cloudy but dry and windy; 7ºC, but feeling colder in the wind).

Lunch.

You might see:
Winter woodland birds.
Plants in flower – we will record them for the BSBI New Year Plant Hunt
A Galápagos tortoise!

Finish: About 13:00

You are invited back to Astle after the walk for mince pies and a glass of mulled wine (Non-alc alternative available for drivers!)

Looking for: Northern Brown Argus, Port an Righ Fossils, rocky shore flora & fauna
Followed by a BBQ

Meet: 2:15 at Pat’s beach hut (NH 8591 7485)
Please park at the Shandwich beach car-park (NH 8593 7508)
Weather: the 5 day forecast shows sunny periods and showers, possibly heavy & thundery!

The walk and beach-comb will be followed by a barbecue at approx 5:30 pm.
TDFC will supply burgers, possibly fish, tatty salad, salad, buns etc.
Volunteers for fruit salad, meringue cases and cream etc.etc. most welcome!

Please let me know if you are attending as we need to plan quantities for the BBQ.
It would also be useful to have details of any sweet you might be bringing so that we don’t end up with piles of meringue cases and nothing to put in them!

Usual mixture of chat, quizzes, silliness and wonderful food. If it’s a clear night bring your binoculars and we can find Comet Lovejoy from Fay’s dark garden.

The wonderful food is supplied by the folks attending so if you can bring something again speak to Fay at tomorrow’s meeting or e-mail me with details.

New Year Walk

is on Saturday 3rd January.

We are having a somewhat more strenuous walk than usual at the New Year – Portmahomack to Tarbatness lighthouse. The reason is that there is the carcass of a sperm whale about 1.5km north of the Port. The committee felt this would be of interest to members.

However the coastal path is rather wet and about half way along there is a gully which requires a scramble!
Meet:Portmahomack path carpark (NH 9153 8482) at 10:30 – on rough ground at the N end of the village. Please don’t block the turning place just before the park.

You need:< Waterproof boots or wellies. Warm waterproof clothes (the forecast is cloudy but dry with a moderate onshore breeze, 3ºC). Lunch.

You might see: Sperm whale carcass (bring your own cloths-peg!), winter coastal birds (there are lots of gulls around the whale including a few Iceland gulls), trackways of the earliest tetrapods to walk on land and of giant scorpions, brown hares, large willow aphid!

Finish: Between 13:30 & 14:30

If you have any suitable items to hang on the TDFC Christmas tree – birds, bees, slugs, snails, spiders, hedgehogs (the list is endless) – then please bring them along to the next meeting (9th Dec). Nothing fragile please. If you add a note with your name and a brief description of the items then you will get the correct things back at the January meeting. If you need anything back for your own Christmas tree, let me know and I will make sure you get things back in time.

Hayley Wiswell, Invertebrate Ecologist, Carrbridge who spoke to us about spiders will be coming so we will be spending some time on invertebrates especially spiders.

We plan to walk on a mixture of the three low level trails, mostly around woodland areas. Whether we go any distance up the Coire Ardair trail will depend on people present, weather, how much time we have spent on the lower levels, etc.etc.

The Monadh Mor is a “bog woodland” so some areas can be very wet underfoot. There are deep bog pools.

Parking is restricted so please park in the Shandwick beach car park (NH 8593 7508) and walk south along to beach path to Pat’s (NH 8591 7485).

Meaty bits, green salad, baguettes, tattie salad, strawberries and cream will be supplied, so if anyone wants to bring a tarte citron or cheesecake that would go down well!
Any food gratefully received. Drink (alcoholic or otherwise) is BYOB.

To help planning it is essential that we know numbers.
Please let me know ASAP if you are coming and if you are bringing any food.

  3. Walk up river Kirkaig to Falls. Coffee shop at Achins Bookshop.
  4. Beachy walk at Achmelvich
  5. Headland / seawatching walk from lighthouse to Point of Stoer
  6. Bone cave, Inchnadamph, on way home, for limestone flowers.

Winter feeding is done by RSPB volunteers arriving at about 13:30 each day.
From the Maryburgh roundabout, travel toward Contin, at the second right (steeply uphill) watch for a sign, further signs appear nearer the site.
There is a charge for the kite feeding centre:

Knockan Crag, Inchnadamph, Lochinver, Achiltibuie.
Details to be finalized nearer the time, but the base will be Scourie where a selection of accommodation is available, from campsite to hotel.
